The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
