Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, States Independent Regulator

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The Championship club's ongoing struggles are seen as a "significant problem" and the football regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in comparable cases, its new chair the official has stated.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporter groups representing the South Yorkshire club in recent days.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club failing to pay players on time on several different times, including in September.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the iconic names for English football and in recent days we have met supporters' organizations.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases submitted for our review if they require examination and addressed."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has not been able to secure a deal with prospective buyers.

Delayed salary payments on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in June, blocking the team from conducting any recruitment activities for the next three transfer windows, although those limitations were removed in the end of the transfer window.

Authority's Position

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, teams facing challenges where people are committed to a regional establishment that has been part of their lives in numerous instances.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that over recent decades have faced collapse, or nearly ceased operations, for reasons that have nothing to do with the followers."

Questioned about whether the regulator could force an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, Kogan said: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to work with them.

"Our least desirable course of action is begin intervening in an specific team, an particular chairman, without being in a position to cooperate with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"But the truth is, when you look back over the history of the game, over the past few decades there have been certain proprietors, not many, but certain individuals who have acted carelessly in the approach they have taken toward their teams and eventually decline to assume obligation for the long-term prospects."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The chairman convened with officials from numerous teams to explain the responsibilities of the oversight body this week and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "significant participation" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished necessary will vanish swiftly," Kogan said.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources coming into football and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on potential dangers and naturally, of the immediate future."

Premier League Concerns

The Premier League opposed the formation of an authority because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the elite division's competitive balance, but Kogan said: "I fully support the prosperity and expansion as an economic entity of the elite league.

"Being fully aware of the apprehension regarding damaging the Premier League as a premium product of the nation. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after today's meeting, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, indeed, they have been telling us in private they have a significant confidence."

Political Connections

Kogan is still facing a "comprehensive investigation" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he acknowledged providing funds to the Labour Party in recent years.

The chairman contributed funds to government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the now Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," the regulator explained.

"I am presently disconnected from any form of political activity."
