EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
