Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators
The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.

This event follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.
