Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
